Vortex Space Systems (VSS) is a veteran-owned small business founded in 2019 and proudly based in Maryland. We're dedicated to developing innovative and cutting-edge technologies that make space travel smarter, safe, and more sustainable. At the core, we're pioneering propellantless propulsion systems, meaning spacecraft that can move without relying on traditional fuel. By eliminating the need for propellant, we aim to create reusable, efficient spacecraft that drastically reduce costs and environmental impact.
Imagine a figure skater spinning on ice: when they pull their arms in close, they spin faster without any extra push. This is called the Conservation of Angular Momentum (CAM), and its the core of our innovative technology. Instead of using traditional rockets, we use a spinning mass to create those pushes and pulls, allowing the CAM drive to generate thrust in any direction.
The current project is development of a Hyper Transfer Vehicle (HTV) which is identified by a Lifting System Machine with a utility patent, number 10,604,255. A lifting system model is being tested as a Phase I concept demonstration and has been proposed for future Phase II research with National Science Foundation. This project isn't just cleaner and more powerful than current electric thrusters; it's reusable and cost-effective, potentially dropping debris removal expenses from $7,500 per kilogram to only $200 for a more efficient debris removal service.
The Hummingbird is a small satellite project based in Montgomery County, Maryland, leveraging the Montgomery County Technology and Innovation Fund to revolutionize the market with innovative, propellant-free technology.
